Years Of Experiences

Delivering Lightest but Strong and Durable Expandable Polystyrene (EPS)

For several years, expanded polystyrene (EPS) has been utilized as a material of choice in several packaging. It is mostly used in Electronics goods packaging and shock sensitive goods packaging such as glass ware, table ware, etc. Besides these,it is also used in food packaging. Most of the coldstores are made with EPS corksheets as it is acosteffective and energyefficient insulation.
But what is EPS? How is it manufactured? And, what are its key characteristics making it suitable in these applications? Explore more about this polymer and find out its benefits, properties, recyclability, etc. in detail.

What Does Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Mean?

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) refers to a rigid, tough and lightweight thermoplastic product. EPS is generally white and made of pre-expanded polystyrene beads. EPS is ideal for the packaging and construction industries due to its light weight, strong and excellent thermal insulation properties. It is the largest commodity polymer produced in the world.
EPS is highly resistant to biological corrosion. It also minimizes the effects of moisture and water vapor, that is why it is used as an insulation product.

How Does It Work?

Expanded polystyrene is a solid foam or thermoplastic product, that has exquisite characteristics such as low weight, insulation properties and durability. The thermal qualities of expanded polystyrene are improved with its strength (density). EPS is easy to install on the construction site. Except construction and packaging, EPS is also used to make protective crash helmets for sports personnel and others. Manufacturers rely heavily on EPS due to its insulation and shock absorption capacity.

How Is It Prepared?

EPS is manufactured through a polymerization process and is a derivative of ethylene and benzene. EPS uses two molding processes:
Block molding – produces large blocks of EPS that are later cutoff into shapes or sheets for using packaging and building/construction applications.
Shape molding – produces parts, that are made as per custom design; used mainly for the packaging of electronic products.
It is fully environment friendly and recyclable.

How Is Expanded Polystyrene Made?

The conversion of expandable polystyrene to expanded polystyrene is carried out in three stages: Pre-expansion, Maturing/Stabilization and Molding

Polystyrene is produced from crude oil refinery product styrene. For manufacturing expanded polystyrene, the polystyrene beads are impregnated with the foaming agent pentane. Polystyrene granulate is performed at temperatures above 90°C.

This temperature causes the foaming agent to evaporate and hence inflating the thermoplastic base material to 20-50 times its original size.

After this, the beads are stored for 6-12 hrs allowing them to reach equilibrium. Then beads are conveyed to the mold to produce forms suited as per application.

During the final stage, the stabilized beads are eithermolded in large blocks (Block Molding Process) or designed in custom shapes (Shape Molding Process).

The material can be modified by the addition of additives such as flame retardantto further enhance the fire behavior of EPS.

Expanded Polystyrene Properties and Key Benefits

EPS is a lightweight material with good insulation characteristics offering benefits such as:

Thermal Properties (insulation) – EPS has very low thermal conductivity due to its closed-cell structure consisting of 98% air. This air trapped within the cells becomes a very poor heat conductor and hence provides the foam with its excellent thermal insulation properties. The thermal conductivity of expanded polystyrene foam of density 20 kg/m3 is 0.035 – 0.037 W/ (m·K) at 10 °C.

Polystyrene as a Shock-Absorbing Material-The general polystyrene properties like low density, rigidity, favorable cushioning properties, easy processing and mouldability, high compression strength, high impact strength make it an ideal shock-absorbing material

Mechanical strength – Flexible production makes EPS versatile in strength which can be adjusted to suit the specific application. EPS with high compressive strength is used for heavy load-bearing applications; whereas for void forming EPS with a lower compressive strength can be used.

Generally, strength characteristics increase with density, however, the cushioning characteristics of EPS foam packaging are affected by the geometry of the molded part and, to a lesser extent, by bead size and processing conditions, as well as density.

Environmental Concerns

EPS is extremely “GREEN”. NEVER any CFC’s, NEVER any HCFC’s.

Expanded Polystyrene has always been CFC- and HCFC-free. Ayesha EPS is an environmentally conscientious manufacturing plant. Our in-house EPS trim is recycled and we accept recyclable EPS from our customers and the public, significantly reducing theamount of EPS that would potentially end up in landfills. Reduced amount of natural gas we use, saving natural resources while being environmentally responsible. We continued our efforts to be mindful of our environment by installing solar panels and replacing our lighting with energy efficient fixtures. All of these actions help to keep the air of our planet cleaner and lessen the impact of landfills on the population.

EPS Insulation is composed of organic elements – carbon, hydrogen and oxygen – and does not contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
